The Beethoven Experience

Andrew Dawes, violin, and Jane Coop, piano

Beginning an exciting new cycle: the complete Beethoven violin-piano sonatas in three concerts, starring Andrew Dawes, violin, and Jane Coop, piano. A brilliant opening to our season!

Andrew Dawes is an internationally acclaimed recitalist, chamber musician and leader of the Orford String Quartet during its illustrious history (1965-1991). He is Professor of Music at UBC and chair of the Banff International String Quartet Competition. He has performed more than 2,000 concerts in over 25 countries.

With acclamations like "virtuoso technique, singing cantabile line, and rhythmic freedom and subtle piano effects," Jane Coop has established a reputation as one of Canada's finest pianists. She tours expensively throughout the world with major orchestras and as a recitalist.

Last year's release of the complete Beethoven Violin & Piano Sonatas for the Skylark label was selected as "Chamber Duo Recording of the Year" by Opus magazine and nominated for a Juno award.

The Aulos Ensemble

A return engagement for the exhilarating and stylish Baroque group. Formed in 1973 by five graduates of the Julliard School, the Aulos has been at the forefront of the early music movement, garnering reviews as "scintillating", "virtuosic" and "authentic baroque performance at its best". In addition to an extensive touring schedule, the Aulos has its own series in New York. Their first recording in 1981 received "Critic's Choice" from High Fidelity magazine, and they have released more than a dozen since.

The Gryphon Trio

Their international reputation contiues to grow! "Big, bold, almost orchestral performances, with the highest musical sensitivity"! Now in their tenth season, The Gryphon Trio is "one of Canada's premier chamber music groups" which performs to great acclaim. Triumphs at prestigous festivals like New York's Mostly Mozart Festival, Mexico's Cervantino Festival and Finland's Khomo Chamber Music Festival have established a strong international following for the group.

Les Boréades

This exciting flute quartet from Québec promises great Baroque music with a French flair. The ensemble Les Boréades de Montréal was founded in 1991 by Francis Colpron. In 1994 the group added two outstanding players, Susie Napper and Hélène Plouffe in order to share with their music-loving public their own passion for the music of the 17th and 18th centuries. The ensemble came to international attention in 1993, when it won third prize at the prestigious chamber music competition at the Musica Antiqua festival in Bruges. Its first recording, Baroque: Sonatas Virtuoses du XVIIe siècle, was nominated at the ADISQ (Association Québecoise de l'industrie du disque, du spectacle et de la vidéo) gala in Montreal.

Critics and the public, both in Canada and elsewhere, have unanimously praised the ensemble for the verve, freshness, theatricality, energy and elegance of its performances, and for the thorough understanding of the baroque spirit which these performances manifest.

Another outstanding Baroque group returns! One of Germany's finest early music groups; since its founding in 1979 the ensemble has performed in almost all European countries and important music festivals. International touring has taken them around the world. With its large repertoire and 25 recordings for Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, Camerata Köln is known for its programmes characterized by individual design and played with "verve, swagger, brilliant technique and musical sensitivity".
