The Edmonton Chamber Music Society is pleased to present, as a special addition to its 2009-2010 concert season, the esteemed soloist, conductor, and recording artist, Jordi Savall.
An early music icon since the release of his soundtrack recording for the 1991 film, Tous les matins du monde, Jordi Savall has long been acclaimed a master of the viola da gamba, one of the most gifted of his time.
A specialist in the music of the Renaissance and the Baroque era, he has expanded the viol repertoire with his re-discoveries of forgotten or little known works and invigorated the early music world in collaborations with other artists. In 1974, he formed, with his wife, soprano Montserrat Figueras, lutenist Hopkinson Smith, and flutist Lorenzo Alpert, the ensemble Hespèrion XX. His exploration of early Spanish music with that group led to a deeper interest in vocal and instrumental music of the Iberian Peninsula and to the founding, in 1987, of La Capella Reial de Catalunya, a large ensemble modelled after those of the 16th and 17th century royal court. In 1989, he founded Le Concert des Nations, an authentic instrument chamber orchestra with a focus on baroque and classical repertoire. Jordi Savall has made over 150 recordings and won numerous awards for his contribution to the arts. In 2008, he was named, with his wife, a UNESCO “Artist for Peace,” in recognition of the attention he has brought to diverse cultural traditions. His performance in Edmonton will feature solo works by a range of Renaissance and Baroque composers, including Bach, Abel, Marin Marais, Sieur de Sainte-Colombe and Tobias Hume. |
